About Gotland in Sweden

Introduction of Gotland in Sweden

Every year tourists from all around the world rent cabins and cottages on Sweden’s biggest island Gotland. This beautiful island is located in the middle of The Baltic Sea, ferry connection is available from the mainland of Sweden to Gotland.

How to get to your cabin on Gotland

The flight time is about 35-50 minutes depending on where you departure from on the mainland of Sweden. The ferry is about 3 hours, the ferry is a car ferry so you can bring your car and then easily get to your rented cabin and travel around the island. You can also rent a car or a motorcycle to explore Gotland. Bicycle rentals is also very popular on Gotland especially in Visby.

The ferry have departures in Nynäshamn (just south of Stockholm), and Oskarshamn (in the province of Småland) with many round trips daily.  The ferry “Gotlandsbåten” have round trips daily between Västervik (in the province of Småland) and also from Nynäshamn during the summer months.

The climate of Gotland

The four seasons are very distinguished on the island of Gotland, the summer is very warm with a feeling of the Mediterranean therefor the summer is peak season for cabin rentals on the island of Gotland. The fall is quite long and warm and the winter is short and mild. Gotland is one of Sweden’s sunniest regions, a true sun and beach paradise. The landscape in Gotland is characterized by pristine flower meadows lined with mountainous pine forest. The cabins are always close to the ocean wherever you are on Gotland. The mild climate favors many unusual plants and flowers, especially many species of orchids. The beaches around your cabin consists of cobblestone fields, tall beach walls, sandstone stacks, alternating with long beautiful sandy beaches.

The city of Visby

Our cabin agency recommends a trip to the city of Visby. It is the only city on Gotland, the city is characterized by a tall stone wall that stretches around most of the city and a beautiful historical downtown. The city of Visby used to belong to the Hanseatic League (founded in 1356) and is well preserved with many medieval houses, churches and church ruins. Thanks to all these cultural treasures, Visby has been selected as world heritage site by UNESCO. Many of our cabins are of a walking or bicycle distance to Visby, otherwise it’s perfectly fine to drive your car and park it outside of the stone wall, then walk through the beautiful and cozy downtown area.

How to find the right dog-friendly cabin — filters & smart tips

Use the search filters to match your plans: select distance to water, lot type, and amenities. Popular options include “Pets allowed”, “Near water”, “Fenced plot”, “Sauna”, “Fireplace”, and “Secluded location”. Water-loving dogs thrive near lakes or the sea; sensitive dogs relax best in quiet surroundings with few neighbours. Active travellers appreciate cabins near trailheads, jetties and canoe launches — morning walks, midday swims, and a cosy fire at night.

Tip: Check each listing for the permitted number of pets, any extra fees, and the property boundaries. If a fenced garden is essential, ask us — we know many cabins first-hand.

Popular settings & quick USPs for dog owners

Pick a setting that suits your dog’s temperament and your travel style. These compact USPs help you scan faster:

  • by the lake • by the ocean • secluded location • fenced plot
  • with sauna • with fireplace • family-friendly • fishing trip
  • near hiking trails • pure nature • accessible options

For easy swims and shore walks, explore our lakeside selection in Cabins by the Lake. If your dog relaxes best with fewer neighbours, try our Secluded Location picks. Coastal fans can browse Cabins by the Ocean. And of course, start from the core category Bring Your Dog.

Rules, season & good manners — safe travels with your dog

Leash rules vary by region and season, especially during spring/summer nesting and calving periods. Always read local signs in nature reserves and national parks. Sweden’s right to roam invites you to enjoy nature without disturbing wildlife or damaging property — dispose of waste, respect private land, and keep safe distances from animals. Many bathing places (badplats) are dog-friendly; confirm locally for the current guidance. For car travel, plan water breaks, shade and non-slip blankets. Depending on season, bring tick prevention, paw balm and a small pet first-aid kit.
