About Northern Sweden

Introduction to northern Sweden

If you’re renting a cabin in northern Sweden you’re never far from the wild, big forest and breathtaking nature. The province close to the border of Norway offers a grand mountain region whereas the coastline region is much less exploited and untouched than what the southern part of the coastline in Sweden is. The nature in north of Sweden consists of old and at times untouched forest, and an abundance of lakes and rivers great for fishing. Cabin rentals are not as widespread in northern Sweden as it is in southern Sweden, which means that the real sought out cabins can be harder to find. There’s a good chance to see and interact with moose, reindeer and other native wild animals in the north of Sweden.

Northern Sweden or Norrland as it’s called in Swedish is the biggest of the 3 parts of the country and consists of 9 provinces:  Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Härjedalen, Jämtland, Medelpad, Ångermanland, Västerbotten, Norrbotten and Lappland. Northern Sweden has a land mass of 59, 6 %, but it has only 12 % of the total population.

Summer in northern Sweden

Northern Sweden is very popular for its nature and also the area where our cabin agency is located, here you can go fishing, hunt, and hike. Berry and mushroom picking is things that people enjoy and come to do here. The forest is very big and the population low so it’s easy to find your own little favorite spot of untouched nature. The fishing is plentiful and the chance to catch fish is high.

Book a fishing cabin in northern Sweden

The hiking trails are plenty and some of them will last you for weeks, with breathtaking views over the mountains and valleys. Many of the ski resorts will offer mountain biking in the summer months.

If you decide to stay close to the coast and you rent a cabin with access to a boat, then you will easily find little islands scattered after the shoreline and the ability to explore them on your own. If you’re staying close to the coast you’ll have easy access to the ocean but are still near the deep forest and wilderness. If you rent a cabin in the high coast region you have to try out the local delicacy “fermented herring” which is both loved and hated by many, this dish is famous for its bad smell. Close to the border of Finland you can try out a unique fishing technique called “Sikhåvning” which can be described as fishing white fish with a bag net.

Worth to mention is that the climate in the north is mild and medium warm in the summer, it’s rare the temperature reaches over 25 C (77 F) which calls for perfect conditions for fishing and also makes for plenty of picking wild berries in the forest. Mosquitos can be a problem especially inland and close to swampy areas, if you decide to go cloudberry picking (cloudberries are also called “the gold of the forest”), you have to make sure to bring mosquito repellant and also wear a long sleeved shirts and pants. It’s also always a good idea to wear mosquito repellant when fishing on lakes and rivers.

Winter in norther Sweden

If you rent a cabin in the wintertime you don’t have to worry about any mosquitos. You will have the chance to many unique outdoor activities, for example dogsledding through the wild nature, or if you’re far up north in Sweden you can go reindeer sledding. In the mountain area there’s many ski resorts with possibility to go downhill skiing and cross country skiing, and then you can finish the day off with “after ski” (a visit at the bar) at the hotel.

Snowmobiling is very popular in the northern parts of Sweden, the trails are long and plenty and basically covers all of north Sweden. You can find guided snowmobile tours for beginners or for the more experienced person there’s snowmobiles for rent.

Fishing is also available in the wintertime, when the lakes are frozen and the ice is thick enough then it’s time for ice fishing. You will drill a hole in the ice and a special short fishing rod is used for catching the fish.

There’s a good chance to experience the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) in the northern part of Sweden, this is something that attracts many tourists every year and the further north you go the stronger and more vibrant the northern lights will be.

A recommendation for you who are renting a cabin close to Jokkmokk is to visit Jokkmokks market in the month of February. The market is also a folk fest for the Sámi people, (Sámi is the indigenous people of Sweden) and many of the crafts and goods are Sámi inspired

Cabins by the Lake

In the category Cabins by the lake, we have added the cabins that have all Sweden's lakes nearby. Renting a cabin by a lake can have several benefits. Especially the proximity to swimming and fishing but also that it is very beautiful. All lakes look different and the nature varies greatly, some lakes have a shoreline of cliffs while others are lined with lush forest.

Fishing in a lake

There is excellent fishing in many of the lakes in Sweden. It is popular to fish from either land, from a small dock or with a boat. There is often the possibility to either rent or borrow a boat at many of the cabins. You can - if possible - rent a boat from the owner of the cabin or somewhere nearby. Some cabins have a boat already included in the rent.

In some lakes in Sweden, game fish have been placed out in the lake so then a fishing license is required to fish. Check with the owner of the cabin about current rules, if the cabin owner does not know what applies, then you can usually find the required information at the tourist office nearby.

To swim in lakes

Since the lakes in Sweden are smaller and shallower than the ocean, they heat up faster to swim-friendly temperatures. This makes lakes extra attractive for all swim-hungry families on vacation in Sweden. Quite often there is either access to a sandy beach or a small dock by the lake. If you rent a cabin by a lake where there is no prepared swimming area, it is always possible to swim anyway, however, the bottom can be muddy and covered with twigs and reeds, but once you have reached the depths, the reward are well worth it.
